Jarg0n Knitting and Crochet Geekery

Friday Finds... jarg0n

Interview # 49
I absolutely love to knit and crochet as you've probably guessed before and am totally besotted with anything that is remotely cute and geeky. I have always been like that in many ways, and was pretty well known in my teenage years for being the one that still thought cartoons were cool (still do.... ahem). Nowadays I am very much inspired by my kids, amigurumi styling and my inner "girl" (I'm a bit of a tomboy nowadays).

Jarg0n on Etsy is an artist that I feel an affinity with in this respect as their work reminds me of a child-like mentality, and the ability to enjoy creations without formality! The work is super cute, fun and bright and I am really pleased that I can share this fab interview with you today :)

(Just click the images to go direct to the listings)

-- Tell me a bit about you! (Name, Age, Location, and give us a random fact whilst you're at it.) My name is Dawn or D4wn1e, I'm 41 years old and live in Rotherham UK with my partner Mick, son Jack and two cats Beta and Pixel. I grew up in a deprived area of England and was heavily into the punk scene while I was growing up. I spent much of my free time back then going to jumble sales and charity shops to buy clothing that I could redesign. I once stole the cricket net and Blackout curtains from school to make a skirt.

-- What is your business about then? Revisiting old skills that I've had an absolute passion for when I was younger. Arts and crafts were always my thing but before I knew it years had flown by and I had spent the time fitting in and being a responsible member of society (House, job, child, relationship). My son often tells me I should do more things that I really enjoy, so I guess my business is about that, rekindling old passions :)

-- How did Etsy come into your life? I had started creating craft items to sell for a charity and raised a decent sum of money. Mick told me about etsy and suggested I should open a shop and see what happens. I was suprised how cheap etsy was to list so thought what the hell.

-- Are you working a day job too? Not a conventional job but for the last two years I have been home educating my son who has Asperger's syndrome and social anxiety disorder due to extreme bullying at school. Although I don't work a regular 9 till 5 job I do put in a lot more hours but it means I can be flexible which works perfectly for the running of my etsy store.

-- How long has the artist in you been 'unleashed' for? The artist me has always been there, she's just been hiding while the other me's were doing the regular stuff. I was taught knitting, embroidery and lots of other crafts from a very early age by my mother who coincidently creates all the crochet items in my shop. My shop has been open for two months now and the artistic me is back with a vengeance!

-- What has been the inspiration behind your business? Mick and Jack are the inspiration for my business. As an artist I find myself very critical of my own work as I imagine a lot of other artists are. The boys give me the confidence to say "Hey my work's good enough to be out there!"

-- If you could describe your products in three words, what would you tell me? Unique, cute and geeky.

-- What would an average working day for you be like from dawn til dusk? Sometimes I get up with Mick when he's getting up for work about 5am, after a cup of tea and a check of my shop I can get a couple of hours crafting in before I wake Jack. The rest of the day is cooking meals, sorting Jack with school work, cleaning, washing, making lots of phone calls and arranging meetings for Jacks ongoing therapy and education. When Mick gets home from work and school, dinner and washing up are done I catch up with my shop and blog, taking and editing photographs, writing item descriptions and gaining publicity on various internet forums, this takes me to 9pm when I will wind down for the evening in front of the tv with a glass of wine but even then I will be crafting.

-- What's your favourite material and techniques to work with? I really love knitting and have recently tried hand felting for the first time which I absolutely love, I'm really proud of my traditional shrunken head bag as I have never seen the technique of tacking in the features pre felting done before and then hand felting the bag and having the features appear in 3D just as I imagined they would look. I should probably point out here for those that don't felt that the pre felted item is a lot bigger than the felted item and so getting the features to appear as they should is kind of tricky.

-- What is your ideal vision for the future for you and your work? My ideal vision for my work is that People enjoy my creations and hopefully I build up a customer base so that my sales increase, I would love for Mick to go part time and be able to spend more time at home.

-- Away from work, what do you like to do for fun or to wind down? I love to game, especially co-op gaming, Micks the family techie so we have a big gaming network at home . We like to kill virtual zombies together (left 4 Dead). We also love to cook and experiment with recipes, we hot and cold smoke food and make our own cheese and of course tv and a glass of wine :)

-- What are you likely to search for on Etsy? Unique one of a kind items with possibly a gothic/horror twist.

-- Any last words? Do what you have a passion for, do it well but most of all enjoy it.

Nevita Handmade Knitted Accessories

Tuesday - BESTeam Mosaic
weekly shoutout to the dedicated workers that like to help other handmade artists...

Nevita on Etsy... I remember a long time ago in the earlier days of my Wednesday gratitude feature having included Nevita in a post in thanks to a feature done on myself. I remember then being impressed by Nevita's inventory of beautiful hand knitted accessories (ooooo the scarves!), and really pleased that I can offer a proper feature for Nevita today that is exclusively for her. Reading about her briefly on her bio profile on Etsy and her beautiful blog it seems that Nevita's crafting talents derived from her her past, being taught various handmade techniques by her Grandmother and have since become a venture that she wanted to share after the birth of her daughter. She has a lovely attitude to her work and seems like a wonderfully positive person, driven towards the happiness she strives to create in other people, and it's this drive that I think reflects in her work which is bright, bold, professional and considered in every detail. I LOVE her items which made it hard for my mosaic today lol! Too many things that i ♥ so I urge you to visit her store to see more :)

Nevita's Blog... is a must to visit to find out more about her work, and the handmade work of other artisans from all over the world. I love that she uses big bold images in her features which breaks up the posts beautifully, and the color scheme is fresh and relaxed making the whole experience a positive one. Stop by and check it out :)

Photo Crazy

Sunday - Coffee and Cake
weekly musings, articles and mostly babble...

Photo Crazy! Anyone that knows me, knows of my Photography Etsy store, and understands a bit about how much I do in any one day would understand how and why I may end up slightly over obesessed when it comes to hobbys in my free time. And I mean in the context of over doing them lol! I don't get much free time, yet when I do I'm one of those people that likes to spend it doing something productive. So for me that would be working on editing photos, taking half a million photos, or knitting... maybe crocheting. Depends on whether it's a hook or needle mood I'm in! This week however I somehow managed to spend 4 days filtering through 2000 images of my family, as since the day my PC died it became one of those 'I'll get to it later' tasks... and you should never think that way should you? It always builds up lol! So yes, my punishment for procrastination was the amount I had to go through to upload into my online family album... I'm certain our relatives were positively thrilled to get an update since my last one in June (yup you heard me right, the 2000 started in mid June!), but by heck do I go mad when it comes to photographing my kids... but they are so cute and funny I can hardly help it, the camera is virtually glued to my neck half the time lol! It's always conveniently there :) But yeah 2000 is excessive... Since the birth of my daughter I have gone a bit nuts with it, and to be fair I have LOADS of new images for Etsy to work on too. And that's a whole other number lol.

I have been trying to juggle planning my craft show and planning my new Etsy store for a few days and apart from purchasing 2 bags of yarn regardless of the fact my wardrobe cascades with the stuff whenever I open it (hey... i like knitting!), I have finally had an opportunity to edit those photos I took a while back of my daughter and some of my New store's inventory. I thought I'd give you all a sneak peek of an inventory photo up above! My readers are the first to see what's to come hopefully in the next week or two :) I still have more to do and having a great time with my kids working on it as it's turning out to be a lovely fun bonding thing for us to do in a day, and my son especially is at a great age for striking a pose lol! If only he'd keep still it would save me a few hundred shots at a time lol! The image that i've included of him here isn't an inventory photo... that's just a picture from the Jazz festival 2 weeks ago... wow time flies!

TaylorHouse on Etsy

Tuesday - BESTeam Mosaic
weekly shoutout to the dedicated workers that like to help other handmade artists...

TaylorHouse on Etsy... Today's feature of a featurer is of Chaucee from Taylorhouse on Etsy. A great store hosting lovely items like knitted warmers like cowls and scarves, yet also boasting a lovely supply of vintage accessories. I'm very impressed with her skills in product photography too, some of the compositions are stunning and in terms of light she makes great use of what's given to her for each of her photographed items. Absolutely everything in that store is tempting just from looking at the photographs! I am a keen knitter myself so I am in love with her cowls and have included a few examples in her mosaic featured a little bit below. Well worth visiting her store!

And Her Blog
... is incredible. If you think her store photos are gorgeous you must check out her blog layout. So bright and absorbing. It took me a while to take my eyes off of her graphics and photographs... Serious awe! It's lovely when you find blogs that have a lot of html input and im guessing that Chaucee has dabbled in it a bit to make her blog look so beautiful. Even how she arranges her adverts is wonderful! This one has a great eye for style, and that's further emphasised by her posts featuring other great sellers from our handmade community. A link on the top left of the page even allows you to submit items for giveaways and submit entires for existing ones. This is definitely a busy blog, yet it shows with all the effort put into creating it! I'm a new enthusiastic follower! So please if you stop by her store, check out this beautious blog too and share your interest too :)

Oh No!

Yes, needless to say I am another one of probably millions today that has decided to become part of the blogging community... Woman what are you doing???? she says... I say that a lot actually...

So now that I've dabbled a bit here and there, making a beautiful display of this "personal" page of mine, I have discoved that I have neither ideas, nor the most remote wit to entertain the mass internetees that are now likely to slate these poor attempts on a first blog! Oh well i have my integrity to show for it! LOL! But yeah, what the heck do you write on this kind of thing? All I am thinking now is my son is napping, and I should probably do something else (i say else, it really should just be SOMETHING) constructive before i melt before the screen and give the other half more to worry about! I remember feeling like I knew what I was doing starting this, and to be honest there is a vague memory of a plan! You MAY see some of my knitted creations on here sometime, or you MAY see some of my artwork... Even a picture or two of the crazy life I lead with the two rather jolly chaps that I love dearly, and the pets too.
In the meantime I think I'll mull over my sudden confusion and make sure that the next blog may offer something more than just my befuddled jibberish! I can't help but think that once I had a brain (hah!) that functioned slightly better than it does now... motherhood for ya, but all worth it in the end! Until next time folks!
